Betting Odds & Football Markets Explained
Understand the price, calculate a potential return and check exactly which football outcome your selection covers.
Clear GHS examples covering probability, bookmaker margin, goal lines and handicap settlement. All prices are illustrative.
What decimal odds tell you
Decimal odds show the multiplier used to calculate the total return on a standard winning cash bet. That total includes the stake. A price of 2.50 therefore represents a total return of GH₵2.50 for every GH₵1 staked if the selection wins, before applicable deductions.
The price does not explain the market by itself. Odds of 2.50 on a home win and 2.50 on over 3.5 goals use the same arithmetic but require different outcomes.
Net result = total return − original stake
| Odds | Total return | Net profit |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | GH₵30 | GH₵10 |
| 2.00 | GH₵40 | GH₵20 |
| 2.50 | GH₵50 | GH₵30 |
| 3.00 | GH₵60 | GH₵40 |
A losing GH₵20 single normally returns nothing and produces a GH₵20 loss. A refunded stake produces no profit. Promotional stakes, partial settlements and deductions can change the amount credited, so compare the calculation with the accepted bet record.

Convert odds into implied probability
Implied probability expresses a price as a percentage. It is a useful way to read odds, but it is not an independently verified forecast.
Odds of 1.50
100 ÷ 1.50 is approximately 66.67%. The price implies a higher probability than a price of 2.00, with a smaller winning return for the same stake.
Odds of 2.00
100 ÷ 2.00 equals 50%. That is the price’s implied probability before considering the bookmaker’s margin or your own assessment.
Odds of 3.00
100 ÷ 3.00 is approximately 33.33%. A larger potential payout does not mean the outcome has become more likely.
For a simplified cash bet without deductions, the implied probability is also its break-even win rate over repeated comparable bets. Estimating an outcome above that rate is a judgement, not proof that the price offers an advantage.
Small samples can be misleading. Three wins from five previous matches do not establish a reliable 60% probability for a different fixture with different opponents and team availability.
Understand bookmaker margin and overround
For a market with mutually exclusive outcomes that cover every possibility, convert each price to implied probability and add the results. A total above 100% is commonly described as an overround.
| Outcome | Odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | 2.00 | 50.00% |
| Draw | 3.50 | 28.57% |
| Away win | 4.00 | 25.00% |
| Total | — | 103.57% |
The overround in this example is approximately 3.57 percentage points. It indicates that the quoted probabilities exceed 100%; it does not mean every customer loses exactly 3.57% or that the bookmaker earns that amount on every match.
A lower overround can help compare prices, but only when the markets have the same definitions and settlement conditions. It does not identify which outcome will win.
Do not add overlapping outcomes such as home win, double chance 1X and home draw-no-bet to calculate a market overround. They do not form a mutually exclusive set.
Match result, double chance and BTTS
A market defines the condition being priced. Read its title, selected outcome and settlement period together. Supporting a team and selecting a specific betting market are different decisions.
| Selection | Meaning | At 1–1 |
|---|---|---|
| 1X2: Home | The home team wins the stated period. | Loses. |
| 1X2: Draw | The teams finish level in the stated period. | Wins. |
| Double chance: 1X | Home win or draw. | Wins. |
| Double chance: 12 | Either team wins; a draw is excluded. | Loses. |
| Home draw no bet | Home win wins; a draw returns the cash stake. | Stake returned. |
| BTTS: Yes | Both teams score at least once. | Wins. |
Double chance and draw no bet are different
Home-or-draw double chance wins when the result is a draw. Home draw-no-bet normally returns the cash stake on a draw. Both protect against a draw in different ways, so their prices should not be treated as interchangeable.
BTTS does not specify the winner
Both teams to score “Yes” can win at 1–1, 2–1 or 1–3. It loses at 0–0 and 2–0. It asks whether both sides score, not whether the match has a particular winner or total.
Goal totals: half, whole and quarter lines
Over and under markets compare the number of goals with a stated line. A match total counts both teams’ goals; a team total counts only the named team. Check whether the market covers the full match or a shorter period.
Half-goal lines
A 2.5 line cannot equal an integer goal total. Over 2.5 wins with three or more goals, while under 2.5 wins with zero, one or two. A 2–1 result has three goals, so over 2.5 wins.
Whole-goal Asian totals
For a standard Asian total of 2.0, exactly two goals produce a push, returning the cash stake. Over 2.0 wins with three or more goals and loses with fewer than two. Under 2.0 wins below two and loses above two.
Quarter-goal Asian totals
A quarter line splits the stake equally between the adjacent whole and half lines. Over 2.25 divides between over 2.0 and over 2.5. Exactly two goals return the first half and lose the second half.
| Selection | Settlement |
|---|---|
| Over 1.5 | Full win. |
| Over 2.0 Asian total | Push: cash stake returned. |
| Over 2.25 Asian total | Half loss: half returned, half lost. |
| Under 2.25 Asian total | Half win: half wins, half returned. |
| Over 2.5 | Full loss. |
For example, GH₵100 on under 2.25 at 1.90 with exactly two goals returns GH₵145: GH₵50 × 1.90 from the winning half, plus the GH₵50 refunded half. Net profit is GH₵45 before applicable deductions.
Handicaps: read the sign and market type
A handicap adjusts a team’s score for settlement. A minus sign gives the selected team a virtual deficit; a plus sign gives it a virtual start. The real match result remains unchanged.
Home −0.5 Asian
The home team must win. A draw or away win loses the bet because subtracting half a goal leaves the home team behind.
Home −1.0 Asian
A home win by two or more wins. A one-goal home win pushes and returns the cash stake. A draw or home defeat loses.
Away +0.5 Asian
An away win or draw wins. A home win loses. The half-goal adjustment means there is no tied adjusted score.
Quarter handicaps split the stake
Home −0.75 divides the stake equally between home −0.5 and home −1.0. A one-goal home win gives a half win: one half wins and one half is refunded.
Home −1.25 divides between home −1.0 and home −1.5. A one-goal home win gives a half loss: one half is refunded and one half loses. A half loss returns half the original cash stake; it is not a winning bet.
Three-way handicaps have a draw selection
In a three-way home −1 handicap, a one-goal home victory produces an adjusted draw. The handicap-home selection loses and the handicap-draw selection wins. This differs from the push on a two-way Asian −1.0 market.
Check the market type rather than relying on the number alone. In-play handicaps may also use a different scoring basis, including only the period after acceptance.
Check the period and settlement rules
Many standard football markets cover normal time plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are separate unless the market says otherwise. “To qualify” or “to lift the trophy” asks a different question from the normal-time match result.
Suppose a cup tie is 1–1 after normal time and the home team wins 2–1 after extra time. A normal-time home-win selection loses, while a home-to-qualify selection may win under its rules.
| Term | What happens |
|---|---|
| Full win | The full stake wins at the accepted price. |
| Full loss | The stake is lost. |
| Push | The result lands on a refundable line and the stake returns. |
| Void | The selection is cancelled under the rules and the cash stake normally returns. |
| Half win | Half wins at the accepted price and half returns. |
| Half loss | Half loses and half returns. |
Postponements, abandoned matches, player participation and statistical corrections require the relevant operator rules. A refunded cash stake and the treatment of a promotional stake may differ.
In an accumulator, a void leg is commonly removed from the odds calculation rather than causing the entire original stake to be refunded. Check the rules for partial settlements and combined bets.
Compare equivalent prices
For the same standard cash selection, GH₵50 at 2.10 returns GH₵105 if it wins, compared with GH₵100 at 2.00. The difference is GH₵5 before deductions. That comparison is useful only if both prices cover the same event, market, line and settlement period.
- Match the team, competition and fixture date.
- Check normal time, extra time or qualification wording.
- Match the exact goal or handicap line.
- Confirm whether the market is Asian or three-way.
- Review the final accepted odds and any promotional restrictions.
Use our 1Win, 1XBet and MelBet comparison for broader product differences. A higher price alone does not resolve payment, account or settlement questions.
Avoid common interpretation mistakes
Check the condition first and the potential return second. A selection with short odds can lose, and a large displayed payout can depend on several difficult outcomes all occurring.
- Return versus profit: subtract the original stake when calculating net profit.
- Over 2.0 versus over 2.5: exactly two goals push the first and lose the second.
- Double chance versus draw no bet: a draw wins one and refunds the other.
- Asian versus three-way handicap: an adjusted draw may refund or lose your selection.
- Normal time versus qualification: advancing does not necessarily mean winning in normal time.
- Quoted versus accepted price: check the confirmed bet record after submission.
If a settled amount looks wrong, retain the bet ID, market wording and accepted odds. Ask support which rule and calculation were applied. A payment delay after settlement is a separate issue; see our withdrawal troubleshooting guide.

Betting odds and markets FAQ
What do decimal odds of 2.50 mean?
For a standard winning cash single, 2.50 multiplies the stake to calculate the total return. A GH₵20 stake returns GH₵50, including the original stake, giving GH₵30 profit before applicable deductions.
How do I convert decimal odds to implied probability?
Divide 100 by the decimal odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 50%, while 3.00 imply approximately 33.33%. These are price-based probabilities, not verified forecasts of the true outcome.
What is bookmaker overround?
Overround is the amount by which the summed implied probabilities exceed 100% in a complete market of mutually exclusive outcomes. It describes the pricing structure, not a guaranteed profit or loss on an individual bet.
What is the difference between double chance and draw no bet?
Home-or-draw double chance wins on either a home win or draw. Home draw-no-bet wins on a home win and normally returns the cash stake on a draw. Their draw outcomes and prices therefore differ.
What happens to over 2.0 and over 2.5 with exactly two goals?
A standard Asian over 2.0 total pushes and returns the cash stake. Over 2.5 loses. Check the market type and settlement period before placing either selection.
What does a quarter handicap such as −0.75 mean?
A standard Asian −0.75 handicap splits the stake equally between −0.5 and −1.0 at the listed odds. A one-goal win produces a half win: half the stake wins and half is refunded.
Do extra time and penalties count in football bets?
Many standard markets cover normal time plus stoppage time and exclude extra time and penalties. Qualification and other specially labelled markets can differ. Read the rules for the exact selection.
Does a higher decimal price mean a better bet?
A higher price gives a larger winning return for the same stake on an equivalent cash bet. It does not guarantee value or a winning outcome. Compare the exact market, line, period and conditions before judging the price.
